Guidelines for Keeping a Sick Child Home/Illness Policy: Most parents have faced the dilemma of when to keep a sick child home from school. The Pleasant Valley School Nurses would like to remind you of our 24 hour policy and offer some guidelines to help you make a wise decision.
Fever. Keep your child home if they have a temperature > 100 degrees. A child should be fever free without taking ibuprofen or acetaminophen for 24 hours before returning to school.
Vomiting or diarrhea. The same 24 hour rule applies. Your child should tolerate a regular meal or two before they come back.
Coughing that won’t stop-or anything different about your child’s breathing. Severe coughing is exhausting for the child and distracting for the classroom. Consult your doctor for persistent cough or breathing that sounds or looks different than usual.
A minor sore throat is usually not a problem, but a severe sore throat could be strep throat even if there is no fever. Other symptoms of strep in children are headache and upset stomach. See your health care professional for a throat culture to determine if it is strep. If your child is diagnosed with strep, keep them home until they have been on antibiotics for 24 hours.
Uncontrolled pain-if your child has mild discomfort and is otherwise acting ok, you may want to give an over the counter pain reliever and send them. However if they are not able to participate in their normal school day, keep them home and call the doctor.
As always we encourage adequate rest, hydration, and proper hand washing to keep the germs at bay. For more information about how long an illness is contagious, contact your general practitioner or visit the CDC website http://www.cdc.gov.
PVHS Preschool: We have some openings in our Pleasant Valley High School Preschool. As part of our Child Development classes, PVHS students operate a preschool that is supervised by Mrs. Debbie Claussen. PVHS Preschool enrolls twelve 3 to 5-year-olds, and meets every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from September - May. This year, preschool meets from 9:00 a.m. - 11:20 a.m. High school students enrolled in Child Development do the actual planning, observing, and teaching of the preschool children in a variety of activities. The high school students develop learning experiences for the children in areas of art, math, science, music, storytelling, food, and safety. If you are interested in enrolling your preschooler, please contact Debbie Claussen at claussendebbie@pleasval.org.
