Dear Riverdale Heights Families,

REMINDER: February 5th is a A day! Please download this new calendar with this update, along with a few changes to the Day 1, 2, 3 and 4 calendar.

Make Up Snow Day: We will make up the day we missed, January 26, on February 12th. B-day students will attend school. Masks will be required at recess. A-day students will participate in their hybrid at-home day.

Recess Zones: Starting February 1, elementary students will no longer be limited to zones on the playground. If you have questions, please contact the main office.

T2K and Preschool Screenings: If you or someone you know is interested in our preschool or Transition to Kindergarten programs, now is the time to sign up for screenings. Learn more at the links below and share them with families with preschool and kindergarten aged students.

Retake Picture Day will be Monday, Feb.1 for Group A and Tuesday, Feb. 2 for Group B. Online students may come in between 11-noon on both days. If you are having pictures retaken, please make sure to bring back the original picture packet.

Lost & Found: Please have your students check lost and found table for anything they are missing. We are accumulating a lot of winter items. Please check the Riverdale Heights PTA Facebook page for pictures.

Meals Available for At-Home Learners: We will have meals available each week for 100% online and hybrid at-home days. You must fill out this form every week by Monday at 6:00am to register for the meals. Meals will be available for pick up every day from 10:30am-11:00am at PVHS in the bus drop off area.

Valentine's Day is about caring for each other and for showing love! It is also a day to demonstrate concern for the health and safety of ourselves and for others, so our celebrations will be a bit different. Teacher-led classroom celebrations will be on February 10 and 11. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, we’re asking that you not bring valentines from home, including food, gifts, or trinkets.

Vote March 2! On Tuesday March 2, 2021, a special election will be held to ask voters to approve Pleasant Valley's Revenue Purpose Statement. A yes vote will allow the district to continue to use one-cent sales tax revenue to build and renovate schools, address major repairs, purchase school sites, install technology, and make principal and interest payments for school infrastructure purposes. This is not a new tax or current tax increase. To learn more about the vote, join Superintendent Brian Strusz and Chief Financial Officer Mike Clingingsmith at one of our community meetings either in person or virtually.

How it works: Select a stencil, add a stain color and up to 3 paint colors for EACH project you order. You complete the sign at home, YouTube instruction video included. These projects are age appropriate for all grade levels, younger grades may need a parent help applying the stencil. Signs are 11”x11”. Each sign project is $30. All project orders must be pre-paid and pick up will be available curbside at school. You can pay via Venmo (info on form below) or drop a check or cash off to school. Ordering start 1/20 and ends 2/12.

Battle of the Books: Riverdale Heights students in 4th-6th grade are invited to participate in a Battle of the Books style competition. Using the Iowa Children’s Choice Award list, teams of students will have the opportunity to compete in a local, district, and regional event. The first round of local competition will take place during the school day shortly after spring break. Click on the links below for more information or to sign up your team. Teams should be finalized as soon as possible. Contact Mrs. Rokusek, Teacher Librarian rokusekkatie@pleasval.org with any questions.

Team Registration Form (students will need to log into their PV Google accounts to access this form)

Jump Rope for Heart: Rope Jumping will begin next week in your child’s PE class. Historically, the Jump Rope unit culminates with a Jump Rope for Heart event that supports the American Heart Association. This year, all rope jumping will be done in class, and at home through the online lessons. However, the choice to support the American Heart Association through donations is voluntary and up to you! Donations this year will be completely online. If you choose to donate, please do not send checks or cash to school, but click here to learn how to donate online. The final date for donations is February 26th.

JA Trivia Bowl: Instead of the Bowl-a-thon, this year JA is hosting a virtual trivia event! Put a team together to support Junior Achievement! JA’s mission is to inspire and prepare young people to succeed in a global economy. JA volunteers teach those skills at PV and the organization gives our 4th graders a change to run a city at BizTown. They do so much to help PV students from in-class, let’s give back!
